Gene editing techniques in mice have been used to terminate the herpes virus dormant in nerve cells, while not completely destroying the virus it does reduce it down to 5% of its overall power in mice. Human trials are not happening until 2023 at the earliest, but lets just take in for a moment and appreciate that an incurable disease might be its way out the door.

One year later and we have an update... Yeah, the nerves and liver had bad reactions in mice. That's not to say there's no progress, just that human trials are not safe right now.
