As a humorous aside the animation quality takes a right nose-dive as Gainax start to run out of money.

Great quality caps on all these classic scenes. The oddities you're pointing out make sense. Those episodes had garbage production because the show was suppose to have a limited run. When they were stranded on the island and went to Africa it was all last minute additions to pad out the story to 39 episodes. Hence the BAD animation and lack of any plot. At least it gave us that Nadia/Grandis scene.
