Anime Sightings Old and New - Combat Mecha Xabungle

[wc2bmalin]

Combat Mecha Xabungle is a giant robot show dating to 1982. I watched it only to get a big dose of retro goodness. Unexpectedly it turned out to be full of DID scenes:

1) episode #1 (15:45) - 4 women (plus an ugly guy) are roped to a piece of stage scenery (Since I doubt anybody's ever heard of this series, I won't bother naming characters.)

2) episode #3 (16:45) - an ugly little girl is roped to the trunk of a tree (This individual's character design is completely ambiguous as to gender, and it's not until more than a dozen episodes later that the audience gets confirmation that the character is indeed of the female persuasion.)

3) episode #9 (15:00) - a group of 6, including two young women plus the ugly little girl, have their wrists roped overhead to a line; later they're shown in a bunch with arms behind

4) episode #10 (15:30) - ugly old woman with rope around her torso, arms behind

5) episode #17 (10:45) - young woman wrapped in a cloak is well-roped to an upright

6) episode #19 (14:00) - 3 women plus the ugly little girl are well-wrapped with rope and tape gagged

7) episode #21 (15:45) - CID situation including the ugly little girl, whose wrists are roped in front of her; around 19:00 a young woman handgags the ugly little girl

8 ) episode #27 (21:15) - a possible continuity failure: a young woman has rope around her torso and arms behind, but when the camera angle shifts behind her the audience can see that her wrists are crossed but no rope is visible

9) episode #31 (15:15) - young woman clamped to a solid metal chair

10) episode #32 (4:15) - same scene from different angle

11) episode #36 (11:00) - young woman handgagged

12) episode #39 (13:15) - young woman has her wrists roped behind; around 20:15 she's suspended by more rope around her torso

13) episode #40 (10:15) - a young woman and 2 guys are roped back-to-back, arms behind; around 15:15 this rope is gone, but around 19:15 the audience gets a good closeup of the rope around her wrists

14) episode #45 (22:15) - young woman clamped to a metal chair

15) episode #47 (7:15) - young woman roped to an easy chair, arms behind the chair, with ankles roped as well

16) episode #48 (12:00) - young woman clamped to a medical table; around 14:15 she's roped to same, and around 16:30 chains are added as well

Cool! This show was one of several mecha series that Yoshiyuki Tomino directed before Gundam sequels took over his career.

The full treatment is a classic scene. Too bad it is so short.

Thanks for pointing out the other DID situations.

Does anyone know the context of the episode 19 scene with the tape gags? Who are those women and why were they tied up?

[wc2bmalin]

First, a word about the plot. In a world mostly consisting of wastelands separating isolated communities, commerce is carried out with giant land battleships visiting the various settlements. This world is mostly hardscrabble reminiscent of the Wild West, but some high tech (the land battleships, crude mobile suits called Machine Walkers, etc.) is supplied by a mysterious group living in domed cities. The main characters occupy a type of land battleship called an Iron Gear. In episode #19 one of their many enemies manages to infiltrate a saboteur onto the Iron Gear. A suspicious crewman opens up a cabin door, and the damsels topple out on top of him. This scene is rather unexpected, so the audience has to assume the damsels caught the saboteur at his dirtywork and he had to tie them up to prevent them from raising the alarm. Or maybe he just did it for funsies.

The ugly little girl was formerly a "sand rat" living in the wastelands. The three women were can-can dancers - hired by the Iron Gear's captain in order to bring culture to the wastelands. Xabungle was not a comedy, but it was definitely less serious than an average Gundam show.
