Space strikers / 20000 leagues in space

Post by uhu »

Well, in the 90's, a french-american co-production made a sci-fi version of the old classic, 20000 leagues Under the sea.
Only few elements were retained (basically names of the ship and crewmen), otherwise no connection with the book.
We are in the future, master phantom, a human turned into a (rather ugly) cyborg, thinks (not so inaccuratly actually, this is what makes the show rather interesting) that humanity left him die and betrayed him. He rebells, and with an army if androids, takes control of the galaxy and earth.
One of the key figures of the human resistance is captain Nemo, a descendant of the original Nemo, commanding a spaceship called the Nautilus, and the show's plot is centred on the Nautilus's missions.
There was only one season out of 26 épisodes. 13 (randomly chosen) were dubbed and aired in the US, in 3D (french version was in 2D). The show had some flaws, but managed to be interesting by its rather original mature story (for a western cartoon), and the combination of 2D and CGI animation, which was rather unusual back then.
The french name of the show was "20000 lieues dans l'espace".
In one episode, the entire crew gets captured and hand, as well as leg cuffed with some kind of amber. One of the crew member is a cute blonde. Sadly, it was one of the 13 épisodes never aired in the US (I say sadly because all 13 US eps are on youtube while the french version is like the holy grail, not re-aired since 20 years, never edited on VHS)
But who knows :)

Found two French recordings and episode 25 (8 in the US episode count) has the blonde and Capt. Nemo handcuffed hands in front with glowing handcuffs.

I found another French episode (16 - Chasseurs de Prime) but that one has nothing.
The show is full-packed of GiD and hands-in-front ties from what I see, so I really doubt we're missing on a hidden DiD gem...

The episode in question could be episode 2 in the French numbering, called "À malin, malin et demi". In the episode I remember, Metallic, Master Phantom's android henchman, is found by the Nautilus crew torn into pieces, and each piece covered with this amber I mentionned. They assume Metallic was disconnected, and use the opportunity to explore the robot's memory, after removing the amber. In the middle of the episode, the parts are stored somewhere, and tadaaa, they all assembly themselves together. It was a trap, Metallic used the opportunity to infiltrate the ship and capture the crewmen.
The amber was used to generate hands and legcuffs if I recall correctly, hands restrained in front.

:S :S :S sigh... yeah, sorry, but I just don't like hands restrained in front. Still, I will post the scene if I ever find it.
The most annoying thing is that 1) no other dub other than English and the two French episodes can be found and 2) even without that, apparently even foreign non-English dubs have only the randomized 13 episodes.

Gotta love production companies sometimes, why did Saban pull this shit? >:( Even leaving apart all the DiD aspects, it's just moronic.

One of the other US episodes (forgot which one) also has the whole group getting captured and handcuffed by one of the villians... or at least it seems so because we do hear the cuffs click but the view is covered by the henchmen and once we see the protagonists again they are free. WTF?

Well, technically Saban was just a co-producer and only there to ensure US distribution.
The main producer and mastermind behind the show was Jean Chalopin. So the guy who created Inspector Gadget, mysterious cities of gold, MASK, Ulysses 31, jayce and the wheeled warries, Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, but also co-founder of DIC. Truth be told he is also "responsible" for terrible stuff like Gadget and the Gadgetinis and most of the inspector gadget cartoons/animated shows that followed the original one (he still holds most of the inspector gadget intellectual property rights, except for live action movies).
I guess that with such a famed guy behind it, Saban did not treally think twice. Plus they knew each other, Chalopin created the prince and the siren animated series for him.
I quite liked the show to be frank when I was a kid. There were some stupid things, and obvious cost cuttings by constantly re-using battle sequences, but overall I enjoyed it I must say.
